Economic Growth Set To Slow Down Around The Globe

The International Monetary Fund lowered its estimate of 2013 world economic growth in October, from the 1.8% it had forecast in April, to 1.5% for advanced countries, and from 5.8% to 5.6% for emerging countries. The most dramatic downgrades came in four important areas: the Eurozone, China, India and Brazil.

As an investor, you need to be aware that many overseas markets are not as promising now as they have been in recent years.

Global and foreign markets have historically provided excellent diversification benefits, offering dependable growth to counterbalance losses on domestic investments. Well-diversified portfolios include stocks, mutual funds, and other investment vehicles directly or indirectly tied to overseas markets.

As growth slows in foreign markets, it will be important to adjust portfolios to take those changes into account. Some investments will be switched to more promising overseas markets, while other assets may be transferred to commodities or other areas that offer more solid growth prospects.

The positive news from the IMF is that many countries are taking steps to improve their fiscal situation. While that is one reason behind slowing growth, it also sets the stage for a strong turn upward at some point in the near future.

We are looking very carefully at the opportunities and risks presented by overseas markets as we adjust portfolios going forward.
