Protect Against Possible Terrorist Attack

Deadly attacks by terrorist groups are spreading throughout the world, including targets in the United States.  Scores of innocent people were killed by shooters in San Bernardino, Calif., and Orlando, Fla. Many others were slaughtered in Germany, Paris, Istanbul, and other parts of the world.

The chance of your business or place of work being targeted for such attacks may be remote, but it still makes sense to prepare for the possibility, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has announced that it aims to enhance preparedness through a "whole community" approach, providing training, products, and resources on issues such as active shooter awareness, incident response, and workplace violence.

"In many cases," DHS says, "there is no pattern or method to the selection of victims by an active shooter, and these situations are, by their very nature, unpredictable and evolve quickly."  For example, the attack in Orlando was carried out by a single shooter at 2 a.m., a time when most people are asleep.

DHS says it offers "free courses, materials, and workshops to better prepare citizens and businessmen to deal with an active shooter situation," and to help people recognize behavior that could be a precursor to an attack.  The killers in both California and Florida exhibited behavior that should have raised suspicion.

To learn the specifics of what you can do to protect yourself, please go to the official website of the DHS and scroll down to "Securing Our Communities: Resources for Small and Medium Businesses."
