Property Tax Challenges Should Not Be Overlooked

Businesses and individuals may be able to cut costs significantly by challenging property tax assessments. Such challenges enjoy a surprisingly high success rate. If it seems that an assessment is higher than that those of comparable properties, or if recent developments affecting the property's value have not been taken into account, then a challenge should at least be considered. To find out whether comparable properties have a lower assessment, city or county public records can be checked.

Firms that specialize in property tax assessment challenges often work on a contingency basis, so that the financial risk of trying to get the tax lowered is small. Preparation for a challenge must usually be done well in advance, since there is usually a deadline within which the taxpayer can challenge an assessment.
