Beware Of Common Home Repair Scams

One homeowner lost over $65,000 when he paid for unnecessary repairs to his roof as well as for insect and mildew spraying. Another woman wasted $120,000 on a roofing job and "borer worm" treatments. Scam artists convinced her she needed these bogus repairs.

If you are told you need repairs of the following kind, beware. They have been used to defraud homeowners.

1. Rotted roof sheathing

2. Quality control inspection (after the first fraudulent repairs are performed, this "inspection" reveals yet more "needed" repairs)

3. Structural flooring supports needed

4. Infestation by insects or rodents

5. Mildew

6. Spraying for mortar mites, bats, raccoons, radon gas, or ghosts (!)

7. Toilet bowl leak requiring repair of rotted floor

Seek a second opinion before laying out any money or signing a contract. Know that you have several days to cancel a contract under federal and state laws. Call the Better Business Bureau to check on the contractor.
