Your Medical File Report May Need A Check-Up

If an applicant for life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance is denied coverage, it may be because of information contained in the applicant’s MIB file. The Medical Information Bureau (MIB)—a sort of credit bureau for medical information—keeps files on millions of individuals. More than 600 insurance companies supply MIB with data.

Insurers use MIB reports in deciding whether to issue a policy to an individual (MIB’s information serves various other purposes, too). The MIB report contains information on chronic health conditions, accidents, and so on.

If insurance coverage is denied, check the MIB report to make sure it’s accurate. Even if insurance coverage is in place, it’s a good idea to check out the MIB report to avoid problems in the future. Contact: MIB; P.O. Box 105; Essex Station; Boston, MA 02112; 617-426-3660. Their website is http://www.mib.com. Reports are free if insurance has been denied; otherwise the cost is $8.50 per report.
